Beautiful Betty
Author: Carol Childs
January 15th 2012 - Beautiful Betty is available for adoption at the Cashiers Highlands Humane Society in Cashiers, NC. She is a cool cat inside and out, a very affectionate, sociable girl with stunning green eyes, a musical purr and plush, velvety fur.  Beautiful Betty has been waiting politely in the community catroom at Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society (CHHS) for more than a year, quietly hoping to be chosen for a happily-ever-after future as a beloved indoor companion and lap cat for life.

At only three years old, gentle Betty has many years left to share love, laughs, grace and beauty with a forever family of her own, showing her many splendor true colors every day in every way.  She's been waiting a long time for someone to recognize what a prize she is, and whisk her away from shelter confinement.  Visit CHHS this week to meet poised and patient Betty; perhaps it's you she's been waiting for all this time.

TWO SPECIAL-NEEDS DOGS NEED TLC  Two special someones are needed to help rehabilitate a pair of special-needs dogs who've spent virtually their whole lives, more than three years, at CHHS, confined in kennel runs by day and individual indoor cells by night.

Tasia, a boxer mix, had been abused as a young puppy before arriving at CHHS, and, before her rescue, Layla, a Lab mix, had been abandoned and neglected at barely three weeks old.  The result of their abysmal early lives is the same: both girls are shy, skittish, and reluctant to trust strangers.  Unfortunately, at the labor-intensive shelter, no time is available for one-on-one special attention, training or rehabilitation.

Tasia and Layla have been at CHHS for more than three years because, understandably, a dog that scurries away, barking or cowering, when approached by potential adopters, stands little chance of being chosen.  Both Tasia and Layla need someone with the time, patience and compassion to adopt and work one-on-one with them, providing plenty of confidence-building, positive reinforcement and tender loving care.

Although CHHS is a no-kill shelter, it cannot serve its purpose or the community by becoming a long-term warehouse for special-needs (but not sick or vicious) dogs.  Therefore, in an effort to find perfect homes for these two less-than-perfect works-in-progress and, at the same time, create space for two adoptable dogs on the waiting list, the regular adoption fees will be waived for Layla and Tasia.

Regular CHHS adoption fees are $75 for dogs, $65 for cats and include vaccinations, microchipping, spay/neutering, ShelterCare 30-day insurance, a free bag of kibbles, and a training DVD and booklet provided by Hill’s Science Diet.  We encourage no-fee overnight stays for potential adopters to assure mutual compatible companionship for people and pets.

Spay/Neuter:  Coupons for free or discounted spay/neuter surgeries by your veterinarian are available at the CHHS shelter in Cashiers (743-5752), Cashiers Chamber of Commerce (743-5191), Highlands Chamber of Commerce (526-5841), Tuckasegee Trading Company (293-1514), and Jackson County Animal Shelter (586-6138).

Location:  Visit CHHS in Cashiers on Highway 64, 2.3 miles east of the crossroads, behind Reid Real Estate.  Hours are 10–4 Monday thru Saturday; closed Sunday.  Visit online at www.chhumanesociety.org.  For more information about animals available for adoption or opportunities to volunteer or foster, please phone CHHS at 828-743-5752.
